How This Course Works

This course prepares you for the TExES Social Studies 4-8 (118) exam. It is organized around the same two domains and seven competencies Pearson uses, so the way you study here maps directly onto what you will see on test day.

Your path through the course

Start with the Diagnostic Quiz. Its job is not to grade you, it is to show you which competencies need the most attention so you can spend your time where it counts.

From there you work through seven competencies in two domains:

• Domain I, Social Studies Content, 71% of the exam: History, Geography, Economics, Government and Citizenship, and Culture; Science, Technology, and Society.
• Domain II, Foundations, Skills, and Instruction, 29% of the exam: Social Studies Foundations and Skills, and Social Studies Instruction and Assessment.

Each competency follows the same three-step rhythm:

1. Study Guide. The full teaching content for that competency, written to the official Pearson framework.
2. Practice Quiz. Questions drawn from that competency alone, with an explanation for every answer.
3. Key Terms. A quick-reference glossary to return to when you review.

After each domain you will find a Domain Review Quiz that mixes questions from every competency in that domain, which is closer to how the real exam feels than a single-topic quiz.

The tools built into this course

• AI Study Buddy. Available on every study guide. Ask it to explain a concept a different way, give you a classroom example for the grade you teach, or quiz you on what you just read. It knows the content of this course.
• Interactive explorers. Two hands-on activities, one for Texas regions in Geography and one for the three branches in Government and Citizenship.
• Domain introduction videos. A short orientation at the start of each domain.
• Progress tracking. Your results page reports performance by competency and links you back to the study guide for any competency that needs more work.

The capstone

The course ends with a Full Practice Exam: 80 questions in a five-hour window, weighted 71% Domain I and 29% Domain II to mirror the official blueprint. Treat it as a rehearsal. One sitting, no notes, no interruptions.

Your capstone result is reported on a 100 to 300 range with 240 as the passing mark, matching the scale Pearson reports. Use it as a readiness signal and a study guide, not as a prediction of your official score. Pearson calculates its scaled scores using a statistical equating process that it does not publish, so no practice exam can convert directly to an official result.

Completing the course and scoring 240 or higher on the capstone earns your digital credential for this course.

Getting the most out of it

• Work in order the first time through. The competencies build on one another.
• Read the explanation for every question you miss, and for every question you guessed correctly.
• If you score below 70% on a competency, return to that study guide before moving on. Your results page links you straight to it.
• Space your studying out. Several shorter sessions will serve you better than one long one.
