Welcome to the TExES English Language Arts and Reading 4-8 (217) exam preparation course. This course is built around four learning tools that work together to prepare you efficiently for the selected-response portion of the exam.
Competency Study Guides. Each of the thirteen competencies has its own Study Guide topic. The guides walk you through every knowledge statement in plain language, with grade 4-8 classroom examples and connections to the Texas TEKS. Read them in order, but feel free to revisit any guide as you study.
AI Study Buddy. Embedded at the bottom of every Study Guide, the AI Study Buddy lets you ask questions about the content you just read. Use it to clarify a concept (“explain this simply”), to see how a strategy plays out in a classroom (“give me a classroom example”), to quiz yourself (“quiz me on this”), or to summarize the most important ideas (“key things to remember”). The Study Buddy is locked to the competency you are studying, so its answers stay focused.
Practice Quizzes. Each competency has a Practice Quiz topic with five untimed questions and immediate feedback. The diagnostic quiz in this Welcome lesson and the domain review quizzes give you broader practice. Practice quizzes count toward unlocking the Capstone Exam.
Verónica AI Tutor. Across the rest of the site, Verónica is your general AI tutor for any TExES question. She has access to all of the study content for this course plus the broader certification knowledge base.
Work through the lessons in order. Each competency lesson follows the same three-step pattern: read the Study Guide, take the Practice Quiz, and review the Key Terms. After every domain, a Review lesson gives you a domain-level summary and a ten-question review quiz. The course ends with the Capstone Exam, which unlocks once you have completed at least one practice quiz per competency.
The Capstone Exam is a full-length timed practice exam for the TExES 217 selected-response section. To open it, you must complete one practice quiz in each of the thirteen competencies. The Capstone draws from the full selected-response question pool across attempts. A scaled score of 240 of 300 marks a passing performance on the course capstone. Pass once, and the course auto-completes and issues your Proof of Knowledge credential.
This course prepares you directly for the ninety selected-response questions on TExES 217. The official exam also includes one constructed-response question in Domain V, worth twenty percent of the scaled score. Domain V asks you to write about standards-based, data-driven instruction grounded in a provided excerpt or learner profile. A strong response names a TEKS-aligned learning goal, explains how to assess mastery, proposes instruction and differentiation, and uses evidence or data to plan next steps. The Capstone Exam in this app focuses on the MCQ portion only; you should also practice writing responses to sample CR prompts from the Pearson preparation manual.
