Real-Time Voice Practice
for Academic English Exams
Live, two-way voice conversation with AI tutors and characters from academic life. Built for international students preparing for TOEFL® and other academic English proficiency exams. A course can teach you the format. This trains you to perform under exam pressure.
Studying Isn’t Speaking
The TOEFL Speaking section, like every other high-stakes academic English exam, asks you to do something a textbook cannot prepare you for: produce spontaneous, well-organized oral responses in English, in real time, with the clock running. Reading about the format is not the same as performing it. Recording yourself once or twice is not the same as a real interlocutor pushing back, asking a follow-up, or pausing in a way that throws off your rhythm.
International graduate-school applicants and professionals preparing for academic English exams know this gap. Students arrive on test day fluent on paper, organized in writing, and prepared with templates, then freeze when a screen prompt asks them to start speaking in 15 seconds. The cure is practice. Practice with feedback. Practice under time pressure. Practice with a partner who responds.
That is what this app does, and it is the one thing a self-paced course cannot do.
How It’s Different From the TOEFL® Course
We already publish a full preparation course for academic English exams. This app is a focused companion to it, not a replacement. Here is what each one does best.
Preparation for Academic English Exams
A complete self-paced course covering all four TOEFL iBT task families. Learn the test, build the academic-language foundation, drill every section.
- Reading section: long academic passages with full strategy walkthroughs
- Listening section: lectures and campus conversations with note-taking practice
- Writing section: independent and integrated essays, with immediate AI-graded feedback on our own rubric
- Speaking section: Listen-and-Repeat and Take-an-Interview tasks, with recorded responses and immediate AI scoring on every attempt
- Vocabulary, grammar, and academic-discourse foundations

Three Ways You Can Practice
Pick the mode that matches what you need today: a structured role-play, a timed exam-format rep, or an open conversation to build fluency and confidence.
1. Academic conversation scenarios
Twenty role-play scenarios across four academic contexts: academic discussion, campus life, independent reasoning, and integrated content. You step into a real moment, not a textbook drill.
Characters include: Professor Wright in office hours, Dr. Patel the academic advisor, Sarah the teaching assistant, Dr. Chen in a scholarship interview, Dr. Singh in a research briefing, Yuki at international-student orientation, and more.
2. Timed exam-format practice
Three timed modes that build the time-pressure muscle the real exam demands.
Conversation: 20 seconds per turn, fast back-and-forth.
Q&A: 60 seconds per turn, longer structured answers.
Presentation monologue: 30 seconds of prep, then 2 minutes of speaking. Builds the sustained academic monologue the timed speaking tasks demand.
3. Open conversation with Verónica
Free-form English conversation on any academic topic. Discuss your research interests, explain your field to her, debate a position, or just talk through your week.
This is where you build the things a script cannot teach: fluency, vocabulary range, the courage to talk through an idea you have not perfected yet, and the confidence to keep going when you do not know the exact word.
Feedback That Remembers You Across Sessions
Generic “good job” feedback does not move a test score. What moves a test score is specific, evidence-based feedback that points to what you actually said, and a coach who remembers the pattern across sessions.
Anchored growth areas
After every session, the AI evaluator quotes things you actually said and suggests up to three growth areas. Never more than three. We do not bury you in corrections; we point to the few things that will move your next score the most.
Six-trait rubric
Adapted from TOEFL Speaking criteria, each scored 0 to 3 from what your transcript actually shows:
- Task response
- Development of ideas
- Fluency
- Grammar
- Vocabulary
- Register
Pronunciation and delivery are graded separately, from your real recording, so a transcript is never used to judge how you sound.
Hear how you sounded
On the two-minute presentation task, the app goes beyond the transcript and listens to your actual recording with audio-capable AI. It reports on your pronunciation, your pace and rhythm, and any audible hesitations, the delivery traits a real speaking exam scores. It also flags the moments you slipped into your first language and rewrites casual phrasing into academic register, so you practice sounding like a graduate seminar, not a hallway chat.
My Progress dashboard
A radar chart of your last-ten-sessions averages so you can see strengths and weak spots at a glance. Per-trait sparklines to track movement over time. A recurring-themes panel that surfaces patterns across sessions. Click any recent session to revisit the transcript and the rubric.
Coach Verónica
Verónica has access to all your numbers. Ask her “what is my weakest area?” or “what should I practice this week?” and she answers with real data from your sessions, not generic advice. She is also grounded in the same academic English knowledge base that powers Verónica across the rest of the Enabling Learning platform (the Preparation for Academic English Exams course content, the TOEFL® task families, our own scoring rubric, and our academic-register vocabulary), so her explanations match what we teach in the course. She is the part of the system that remembers you across every login.
See the Feedback and Progress You Get
This is the actual app. After every session you get evidence-based feedback anchored in what you really said, an audio analysis of how you sounded, and a progress dashboard that tracks your growth across the rubric. Click any image to enlarge it.
The feedback shown is real output generated by the app.
Real-Time Voice Conversation Technology
The Preparation for Academic English Exams course already includes practice across all four TOEFL sections, with immediate AI feedback on writing essays and on recorded Speaking responses. What this app adds is a distinct capability: live, real-time voice conversation with an AI interlocutor that listens, processes, and responds within milliseconds. It is a separate app. It complements the course; it is not included in it.
Voice in, voice out, no pauses
Your voice goes in and the AI character’s response comes out as it would in a real call. You can interrupt, ask for a repeat, or change direction without awkward waits. The conversation flows like one with a person.
Faithful transcription of your voice
For the feedback to be useful, the transcript of what you said has to match what you actually said. We use the most precise transcription technology available because cheaper options often mishear multilingual speakers, and inaccurate transcripts make the feedback worthless.
Behavioral rules and pedagogical guardrails
Each AI character’s role, tone, and limits are defined in writing. Verónica will not pull you into politics, religion, or topics outside academic English. The whole system is tuned so the conversation stays focused on what actually prepares you for the TOEFL and other academic English exams.
Talk to Your Coach in the Language You Prefer
Your voice practice is always in English, because that is what the exam measures. But when you talk to Verónica about your progress, when you ask her to explain a correction, or when you want to understand a technical term, she replies in whatever language you prefer to write in. For many international students, English is a second language; for some, it is a third. Verónica adapts to you.
Watch Verónica explain it herself.
Eight short parts, under five minutes. What she can do for you, and how to use her while you study.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from your Preparation for Academic English Exams course?
The course teaches you the test. It covers all four TOEFL iBT task families (reading, listening, writing, speaking with recorded Listen-and-Repeat and Take-an-Interview tasks), with AI-graded recordings on our own rubric. It is the complete academic-English foundation.
This app is a focused speaking gym. It adds three things the course cannot: live two-way voice conversation in real time, pedagogical feedback that remembers you across sessions, and a multilingual progress coach. They are designed to work together, course for learning the exam, app for rehearsing the speaking live.
Do I need a microphone? Does it work on my phone?
Yes, you need a working microphone, which is built into every laptop and every phone made in the last decade. The app runs in the browser, so no app store download is required. It works on desktop, tablet, and phone. For best audio quality, use a quiet room and either earbuds with a built-in mic or a headset.
What if I have an accent? Will the AI understand me?
Yes. We deliberately chose the highest-accuracy transcription technology available, because cheaper alternatives often mishear or substitute words when transcribing multilingual speakers. This technology transcribes multilingual speakers accurately. Your actual words show up in the transcript, which is what gives the feedback any chance of being useful.
Why is this a separate product from the course?
Real-time two-way voice AI is meaningfully more expensive per session than text or pre-recorded-response practice. To keep the course price accessible while still offering students a high-quality live-speaking experience, we built the speaking app as a premium add-on. You can use the course on its own and do well. The app is for students who want to add the live-speaking practice that most closely mirrors test-day conditions.
Can I cancel? Are there refunds?
You purchase an access window (3, 6, or 12 months) that does not auto-renew; it is not a recurring subscription, so there is nothing to cancel. For refunds, we offer a full refund within the first 7 days if you have not used more than 3 practice sessions. Email us at info@enablinglearning.com from the address you purchased with and we will process the refund directly to your card.
Are my conversations stored? Who can see them?
Your session transcripts and rubric scores are stored in your account so that the My Progress dashboard, growth-area memory, and Coach Verónica can give you continuity across sessions. Only you can see them. The system processes them to generate the analytics in your dashboard. We do not share your conversations with third parties or use them for marketing.
How many conversations can I have?
Unlimited within your access period. Each individual session is capped at 10 minutes so the time-pressure rhythm stays exam-like, and so the per-session feedback stays focused. Do as many sessions as you want, day after day, across the 3, 6, or 12-month window you choose.
Is this affiliated with ETS or the official TOEFL exam?
No. This is independent test preparation. TOEFL® is a registered trademark of Educational Testing Service (ETS). Enabling Learning LLC is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by ETS. We mention the TOEFL exam by name because that is the academic English exam most of our students are preparing for, and that is what the rubrics and timing modes were designed to mirror.
