From Text-Driven Stories to AI-Supported Story Worlds

Long before AI entered classrooms, some of the most engaging digital learning came from simple, text-based adventures. These experiences worked because of their structure, each choice had consequences, and the world responded accordingly. In this blog post, the author argues that AI should enhance, not replace, instructional design. By building strong narrative frameworks (what game designers call a “story bible”) educators can use AI to generate dynamic, multilingual learning experiences. The post explores this idea through a Renaissance-themed text adventure that blends historical accuracy, guided decision-making, and language learning.

Building the Next Wave of Scenario-Based Learning

The announcements from OpenAI Dev Day 2025 open up incredible possibilities for education. AgentKit will let us design smarter and more adaptive learning agents. Sora brings text-to-video generation to our scenario-based activities, adding movement and emotion to what learners experience. GPT-5 Pro takes reasoning and reflection to a whole new level, helping us design richer cognitive tasks. Together with new voice and image tools, these updates will make our learning environments feel more alive, more personal, and more connected to authentic classroom practice.

STEM, Scaffolding, and the Future of Teaching & Learning

In this post, I reflect on my recent presentation at the Alamo STEM Ecosystem meeting, where I shared how artificial intelligence, and specifically tools like the AI tutor Verónica, can support educators in multilingual classrooms. I explore the concept of vibe coding, a new approach to programming with AI, and show how teachers can use tools like Claude to build their own classroom resources, even with minimal coding experience. From coding with my kids to creating interactive language games, I discuss the potential of AI to empower both educators and students as creators, not just consumers. This is about more than just technology, it’s about ownership, creativity, and building the future of education from the inside out.

Transforming Bilingual Teacher Preparation with AI

My first year as a bilingual teacher was a whirlwind of frustration and self-doubt. Despite my optimism, I often felt overwhelmed by the demands of teaching students at varying levels of language acquisition. Meeting their diverse needs with limited preparation left me feeling unprepared and isolated. Fortunately, experienced teachers recognized my struggles and stepped in to mentor me. Without proper preparation or mentorship, many teachers face burnout, students suffer from inconsistent instruction, and the profession continues to see high attrition rates. This experience showed me how critical it is to provide robust, accessible, and innovative teacher preparation programs. That’s why I developed Verónica, an AI-powered virtual tutor designed to bridge these gaps. I’ll be presenting this solution and sharing how it can transform teacher preparation at the upcoming NABE Conference.

Unlocking Learning and Language Through AI Coding

Coding has shifted from a specialized skill to an essential tool for navigating and shaping the future. With AI-driven platforms like GitHub’s Learning Sandbox (soon to be available), learning to code is more accessible and engaging than ever. This new tool, unveiled at the GitHub Universe 2024 conference, provides an interactive environment where users can build projects while receiving real-time guidance tailored to their skill level. It transforms coding education into a process of growth and exploration, allowing learners to experiment, ask questions, and gain confidence. In the post, I highlight an example activity where students use coding to deepen their understanding of scientific concepts. This example illustrates how coding can transform learning into an interactive, real-world experience.
