How We’re Using AI to Redefine Teacher Preparation

In this post, I share how we’re using artificial intelligence to transform teacher preparation, especially for those entering bilingual and ESL classrooms. I introduce Verónica, our AI tutor, and explain how she goes beyond simple chat to deliver scenario-based learning and structured feedback aligned with certification standards. I also go behind the scenes to show how we’ve built a system that blends expert content, database design, and smart evaluation tools to support real growth. This isn’t about replacing educators. It’s about creating better pathways for them, grounded in practice, guided by data, and always connected to human support.

A New “Chapter”: AI-Guided Teacher Support

I’m proud to share that my co-authored chapter with Dr. Uvaldina Janecek, AI-Guided Professional Development: A Vygotskian Approach for Teachers in Multilingual Classrooms, is now published in the new IGI Global volume, Harnessing AI’s Potential to Support Student Success and Teaching Excellence. In our chapter, we introduce Verónica, an AI-powered virtual tutor designed to support bilingual and ESL educators through personalized, scenario-based guidance. Grounded in Vygotsky’s theory, our approach shows how AI can serve as a mentoring tool—scaffolding teacher growth, easing planning demands, and enhancing support in multilingual classrooms. This chapter is part of a larger volume filled with practical, research-based strategies for using AI to empower educators and improve student learning.

STEM, Scaffolding, and the Future of Teaching & Learning

In this post, I reflect on my recent presentation at the Alamo STEM Ecosystem meeting, where I shared how artificial intelligence, and specifically tools like the AI tutor Verónica, can support educators in multilingual classrooms. I explore the concept of vibe coding, a new approach to programming with AI, and show how teachers can use tools like Claude to build their own classroom resources, even with minimal coding experience. From coding with my kids to creating interactive language games, I discuss the potential of AI to empower both educators and students as creators, not just consumers. This is about more than just technology, it’s about ownership, creativity, and building the future of education from the inside out.

Connecting with Parents Through Technology

Technology is transforming how bilingual and ESL teachers connect with diverse families and communities, breaking down language barriers and fostering inclusivity. This blog post explores how tools like Microsoft Teams, Google Workspace with Gemini AI, and Speechify can empower educators to engage parents, support emergent bilingual students, and reach underserved populations. By using these tools intentionally, educators can create stronger connections beyond the classroom, ensuring every student and family feels supported and included.

Language Development Through Video Games

Video games often get a bad reputation, but they can be powerful tools for education, especially when used thoughtfully. In my family, I’ve seen firsthand how games like Roblox foster teamwork and strategic thinking, while immersive titles like The Legend of Zelda encourage problem-solving and language development. One strategy I’ve found particularly effective is switching the language settings of games to Spanish, helping my kids strengthen their bilingual skills in a natural and engaging way. Games don’t just entertain, they teach collaboration, critical thinking, and even cultural literacy. As parents and educators, we have an opportunity to harness the potential of video games to support meaningful learning and real-world skill-building. With the right approach, gaming can bridge the gap between fun and education, leveling up both knowledge and confidence.

Transforming Bilingual Teacher Preparation with AI

My first year as a bilingual teacher was a whirlwind of frustration and self-doubt. Despite my optimism, I often felt overwhelmed by the demands of teaching students at varying levels of language acquisition. Meeting their diverse needs with limited preparation left me feeling unprepared and isolated. Fortunately, experienced teachers recognized my struggles and stepped in to mentor me. Without proper preparation or mentorship, many teachers face burnout, students suffer from inconsistent instruction, and the profession continues to see high attrition rates. This experience showed me how critical it is to provide robust, accessible, and innovative teacher preparation programs. That’s why I developed Verónica, an AI-powered virtual tutor designed to bridge these gaps. I’ll be presenting this solution and sharing how it can transform teacher preparation at the upcoming NABE Conference.
