Unlocking Learning with TPR: Movement, Language, and Technology

Total Physical Response (TPR) is a dynamic teaching method that combines language learning with physical movement, helping students adapt to new school environments and academic content. Developed by Dr. James Asher, TPR allows students to internalize vocabulary through action, making even complex concepts in subjects like math, science, and social studies easier to grasp. By pairing TPR with storytelling and technology, such as video creation and interactive whiteboards, teachers can create engaging, memorable lessons that support long-term retention and deeper understanding. This blend of movement, language, and tech offers a creative way to enhance learning and ensure students can navigate both their new language and academic challenges successfully.

Transforming Teacher Training: A Hybrid Approach to PD

Our hybrid professional development model combines face-to-face workshops with continuous online support and is designed specifically for teachers of emergent bilingual students in STEM. Educators engage in hands-on activities during full-day workshops, learning effective strategies like the ExCEL Method of Instruction. Afterward, they gain access to an online platform equipped with AI-powered tools that assist in creating personalized lesson plans and resources, all tailored to students’ language proficiency and academic needs. What sets this model apart is its foundation in real classroom experience. The AI is trained using data and insights from experienced bilingual educators and instructional experts who have worked directly with emergent bilingual students.

Empowering Multilingual Learners and Pre-Service Teachers with AI

As an educator and instructional designer deeply committed to bridging gaps in education, I am particularly proud to be part of an initiative transforming support for emergent bilingual students: the Bilingual Homework Hotline (BHH). I joined this innovative project in 2021, which is a collaboration between the University of North Texas, Texas Woman’s University, where I served as a Visiting Assistant Professor, and the Denton Independent School District. This project addresses the unique needs of students learning in two languages while tackling academic challenges. The BHH offers dual benefits: it provides students with crucial, real-time support in understanding their homework, and it gives pre-service teachers the opportunity to apply the theory they’ve learned in a practical setting. This hands-on experience sharpens their teaching skills, enhances cultural awareness, and strengthens their ability to meet the academic and linguistic needs of emergent bilingual students.

Metacognitive Strategies and AI in Teacher Education

As an instructional designer specializing in online preparation courses for preservice bilingual and ESL teachers, I’ve seen firsthand how metacognitive strategies can transform the learning journey. These strategies encourage learners to reflect on their cognitive processes, evaluate their learning techniques, and make informed adjustments to enhance their study habits. When combined with AI-powered tools, the potential for fostering a culture of continuous learning and development is immense.
