As an educator and instructional designer deeply committed to bridging gaps in education, I am particularly proud to be part of an initiative transforming support for emergent bilingual learners: the Bilingual Homework Hotline (BHH). I joined this innovative project in 2021, a collaboration between the University of North Texas, Texas Woman’s University, where I served as a Visiting Assistant Professor, and the Denton Independent School District. Developed in response to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 lockdown, the project is designed to address the unique needs of students learning in two languages while tackling academic challenges.

A Win-Win Educational Endeavor

Operating four days a week via Zoom, the Bilingual Homework Hotline connects elementary through high school students in Denton ISD with aspiring bilingual and ESL educators from the local universities (UNT and TWU), creating a mutually beneficial experience for both students and pre-service teachers. The Homework Hotline offers dual benefits: it provides emergent bilingual students with crucial, real-time support in understanding their homework while offering pre-service teachers the opportunity to apply the theory they’ve learned. This hands-on experience sharpens their teaching skills, enhances cultural awareness, and strengthens their ability to meet the academic and linguistic needs of emergent bilingual students.

Leveraging Large Language Models for Educational Support

As part of this project, I proposed the development of a centralized website to streamline access to resources, schedules, orientation videos, and communication tools for administrators, professors, and the pre-service teachers tutoring the students. Additionally, I integrated artificial intelligence into the website by developing an AI-powered chatbot. This chatbot assists pre-service teachers with common questions related to supporting emergent bilingual learners and addressing specific homework issues. It serves as an initial layer of support to pre-service teachers and students, enhancing the accessibility and responsiveness of the Homework Hotline.

When we first incorporated AI into the project, we used an early version of OpenAI’s GPT-3 model. While it provided a solid foundation, limitations emerged with complex queries in subjects like math, science, and physics. To address these, we refined the chatbot’s prompts and created a specialized math version. Additionally, we embedded a database of best practices for supporting emergent bilingual learners, which, through the use of embeddings, allowed the AI to access more relevant data. Over time, we introduced features like document and image uploads (e.g., graphs, formulas, diagrams), enabling the AI to respond more effectively and promptly to student questions. It is important to highlight that the chatbot is designed to explain the reasoning behind each solution rather than simply providing an answer, thus empowering tutors to guide students in developing independent problem-solving skills. 

Harnessing Advanced AI for Enhanced Problem-Solving and Multilingual Support

As we continue our work on this project, leveraging more advanced AI models holds tremendous potential for expanding the scope and quality of support for both students and teachers. With the recent release of OpenAI’s latest reasoning model, OpenAI o1 (Preview and Mini), we are excited about the possibility of making our chatbot significantly more powerful and versatile. These new models are designed with enhanced reasoning capabilities, enabling deeper contextual understanding and more effective problem-solving, particularly in complex academic subjects such as math and science.

The latest AI models excel in several areas critical to our project:

  • Enhanced Reasoning Abilities: These models handle logical reasoning and problem-solving with greater precision, enabling the chatbot to assist more effectively with complex math and science problems.
  • Multilingual Proficiency: The improved language understanding allows the chatbot to operate seamlessly in both English and the students’ native languages, offering culturally and linguistically relevant explanations.
  • Contextual Understanding: With a deeper grasp of context, the chatbot can provide more accurate and personalized responses, enhancing the quality of assistance tutors can offer.

By integrating advanced AI models into the Homework Hotline’s chatbot, the project is expected to deliver significant improvements. Pre-service teachers will have access to highly effective support tools, enabling them to offer more refined assistance and gain a deeper understanding of strategies for helping emergent bilingual students. This, in turn, will provide students with clearer and more accurate explanations, enhancing their ability to grasp complex concepts. Moreover, this integration demonstrates the power of combining technology and education to create enriched learning environments, particularly for students who face language barriers.

A Lifeline for Students and a Learning Ground for Future Teachers

The Bilingual Homework Hotline has garnered remarkable feedback, both from the pre-service teachers who participate and the families and students who benefit from the service. Pre-service teachers have consistently shared that their involvement in the program has been an invaluable opportunity to develop the essential skills they will need when they step into their own classrooms. The chance to work directly with students in a supportive environment has allowed them to apply theory to practice, deepen their understanding of effective teaching strategies, and grow more confident in meeting the diverse needs of bilingual learners.

The feedback from the community has been overwhelmingly positive. The school district has received multiple videos, comments, and phone calls from grateful parents and students who express how much the BHH has helped them. Many students have shared that without this kind of support, they would be struggling to keep up with their academic work. Personally, I have spoken to students who have been especially thankful because they are in grade levels where no support in their native language is available. For these students, the BHH has been a lifeline, providing the critical help they need to succeed in school. It is clear that this program is making a real difference, both in empowering pre-service teachers and in offering essential academic assistance to bilingual students who need it most.

A Commitment to Continuous Improvement

As we implement these advanced AI capabilities, our commitment to supporting emergent bilingual learners and pre-service and in-service remains steadfast. We will continue to monitor the chatbot’s effectiveness, gather feedback from tutors and students, and make iterative improvements to ensure the Homework Hotline remains a vital educational resource. Integrating advanced AI into initiatives like the Bilingual Homework Hotline represents a crucial advancement in addressing the specific challenges faced by emergent bilingual students. By equipping pre-service teachers with powerful tools, we enhance their ability to apply theoretical knowledge in practical settings, thereby enriching their own learning process. Simultaneously, these tools have the potential to significantly improve educational outcomes for emergent bilingual students, fostering academic success for both the tutors and the learners. I’m excited about the transformative impact these AI models will have on our communities.

This initiative reflects my broader mission as an educator and instructional designer: to harness emerging technologies like AI to create equitable, culturally responsive, and accessible learning environments for all students, particularly those navigating the complexities of bilingualism. By continually refining these tools, we can ensure that emergent bilingual learners are not only supported but empowered to thrive academically.

A Model Worth Replicating

The Bilingual Homework Hotline (BHH) is more than just a local solution; it is an initiative that can serve as a model for other institutions looking to support emergent bilingual learners. The success of this project is largely due to the time and dedication of administrators, school district personnel, and support staff who, in many cases, have volunteered their time and expertise beyond their regular duties. Their investment, along with the involvement of pre-service teachers, has created a truly collaborative effort that directly impacts the academic success of students.

Based on the overwhelmingly positive feedback from pre-service teachers, parents, and emergent bilingual students, we know that projects like BHH are having a direct and measurable impact on the educational process. In a time when many school districts are facing budget cuts, it’s crucial to explore innovative ways to maximize educational resources. The BHH project is an excellent example of how maximizing resources, combined with the potential for automation through AI, can yield significant educational benefits. We truly believe that by using AI-powered tools to supplement the work of pre-service teachers, in-service teachers, and administrators, we can create a model that not only supports this project but can also be scaled and replicated to meet the needs of other districts. This is a prime example of how strategic investment in education can yield the highest returns.

While we at Enabling Learning invest considerable time in finding the best ways to harness the power of large language models and AI systems, we know from experience that these technologies will never replace the invaluable impact of direct human interaction between a student and a caring, knowledgeable teacher. The role of the teacher is irreplaceable, especially when it comes to fostering meaningful relationships and providing guidance that extends beyond academic knowledge. Additionally, increasing parental involvement in the education process has proven to be a crucial factor in student success. As I mentioned in a previous post, many immigrant families are eager to support their children’s education, and the BHH has demonstrated that projects like this are an excellent way to bridge that gap and empower families to become more involved.

There is room for ongoing discussions about how to best use artificial intelligence in education, but the sooner we embrace these technologies and integrate them with the expertise of dedicated educators and administrators, the better the results will be in both the short and long term.

A Good LLM Doesn’t Make a Good Teacher

When people learn that our speaking apps run on advanced AI, they ask which model we use. It is the least interesting part of the story. Choosing a capable model is the easy part; any developer can connect to one. What decides whether a learner actually improves is whether the system understands how people learn to speak a second language. That knowledge does not come from the model. It comes from us, from years in bilingual classrooms, instructional design, and second language acquisition research. This post is about how we build AI tutors as educators, not just engineers.
