One of the biggest challenges for many pre-service teachers pursuing bilingual education certification in Texas is mastering the Bilingual Target Language Proficiency Test (BTLPT). While many candidates are confident in their conversational Spanish, the exam requires proficiency in academic Spanish, which can be difficult to develop without structured practice as well as meaningful and constructive feedback.

Recognizing this challenge, last year, we were approached by a higher education institution seeking a realistic practice exam that would accurately mirror the structure, timing, and mechanics of the BTLPT. They needed a solution that would not only simulate the exam experience but also provide detailed feedback to help students improve. That request led to the development of the BTLPT Online Practice Exam, a resource designed to offer test-takers an authentic and supportive preparation experience.

With the launch of this new version practice exam, we are expanding our impact beyond our books, online courses, and institutional partnerships to provide a powerful tool that replicates the real testing experience and delivers immediate AI-powered feedback. What began as a resource for certification programs and higher education institutions is now available to everyone, because today, we are announcing that the BTLPT Online Practice Exam is now open for individual purchase, giving all test-takers access to a true test-day experience with expert-level evaluation.

The BTLPT Practice Exam I Wish Existed

As someone who has worked with multiple institutions to prepare students for this exam, I have seen firsthand how timely and structured feedback (especially when provided in Spanish and aligned with the specific tasks of the BTLPT) makes a significant difference in student outcomes. While working at a higher education institution grading an online version of the BTLPT, I dedicated countless hours to evaluating students’ oral and written responses, crafting detailed feedback to help them improve. However, months later, I discovered that when students received their scores, they were only given a number, none of my feedback was ever shared with them. Not only was this a frustrating realization, but it also meant that students were being denied the constructive guidance they needed to improve.

Determined to fix this, I worked to revamp the system, ensuring that students would actually receive the feedback they needed to grow. Once these changes were implemented, I saw a dramatic shift, students not only performed better on the practice exam, but their scores on the actual BTLPT improved as well. This experience reinforced what I already knew: feedback is not just important, it is essential.

That’s why, over the last year, we have refined and perfected our AI-powered tutor, Verónica, specifically designed to support ESL and bilingual educators. Verónica is trained not only to evaluate responses using the same criteria as the actual BTLPT but also to provide immediate, detailed, and meaningful feedback in Spanish, something I always wished students could receive without waiting days or even weeks for an evaluation. With Verónica, test-takers now get instant, structured guidance, ensuring that every response (spoken or written) becomes a learning opportunity.

Designed to fully replicate the BTLPT, this practice test includes all sections (Listening, Reading, Oral Expression, and Written Expression) so test-takers can practice under the same conditions they will face on exam day. The Oral and Written tasks require timed responses, just like in the real test, giving users a true-to-life experience that helps them develop effective test-taking strategies and time management skills. What truly sets this practice exam apart is the immediate AI-powered feedback. Within an hour of completing the test, test-takers receive detailed evaluations of their performance, eliminating the guesswork often associated with traditional test prep.

For the Oral Expression section, Verónica evaluates whether ideas are well-structured and easy to follow, whether the vocabulary used is appropriate and varied, and whether there are consistent grammatical issues that might affect clarity. The feedback provides test-takers with specific insights into their spoken responses to ensure their answers are not only grammatically sound but also natural and well-organized.

In the Written Expression section, Verónica goes beyond simple corrections to offer a detailed breakdown of mistakes and personalized recommendations. Each response is fully corrected so that test-takers can compare their original writing with an improved version. Additionally, the system provides an analysis of key errors, including spelling, grammar, and structure, along with explanations of why certain choices were incorrect. This feedback is designed not just to correct mistakes but to help test-takers understand and internalize better writing strategies. Verónica also offers personalized suggestions to enhance clarity, coherence, and overall composition quality, ensuring that test-takers gain the confidence and skills needed to excel in the written portion of the BTLPT.

Verónica Speaks Twelve Languages. The Hard Part Was the Rules.

Verónica, the AI tutor inside our courses and apps, now responds in twelve languages. Arabic, Telugu, Tamil, and Korean joined because districts and teacher preparation faculty kept describing the families they serve. Adding the languages was never the hard part, since these models were multilingual from the start. The hard part was the rules: which characters even count as letters, whether the page or the person gets to decide, and when a tutor should hold the target language instead of following a student into English. Here is what broke, what we changed, and why it matters.

A Certificate No One Can Verify. It Is Just a File.

Most professional certificates share one weakness: confirming they are real means contacting the issuer and waiting, so in practice it rarely happens. A PDF can be edited in a browser. A paper certificate proves only that someone owned a printer. This post makes the case for digital credentials for both learners and institutions, looks at what the 2026 hiring research actually shows, explains why course completion is the wrong trigger for issuing one, and describes transparently how our scored capstone gates work, why we chose the Proof of Knowledge platform, and what we would tell any institution starting from zero.

Claude for Teachers: Anthropic’s Free Program for Educators

On July 14, 2026, Anthropic announced Claude for Teachers, a program that gives verified K-12 educators in the United States a full year of free access to premium Claude capabilities. It includes a teaching skills library, lesson planning grounded in evidence-based curricula, class data analysis, and integrations with nine school tools. In this post, we break down what teachers actually get, the privacy commitments behind the program, and the honest caveats, including US-only eligibility. We also added a complete Claude for Teachers topic to our free course, Boosting Productivity with AI for Teachers.

A Good LLM Doesn’t Make a Good Teacher

When people learn that our speaking apps run on advanced AI, they ask which model we use. It is the least interesting part of the story. Choosing a capable model is the easy part; any developer can connect to one. What decides whether a learner actually improves is whether the system understands how people learn to speak a second language. That knowledge does not come from the model. It comes from us, from years in bilingual classrooms, instructional design, and second language acquisition research. This post is about how we build AI tutors as educators, not just engineers.
