Comprehensive Exam Prep for TExES English Language Arts and Reading 4-8 (217)
This self-paced course prepares you for the current TExES English Language Arts and Reading 4-8 (217) exam. Designed for preservice and inservice Texas educators, it covers the 4 selected-response domains across 13 competencies with research-aligned study content, AI-powered practice tools, and a full selected-response capstone exam aligned to the current Pearson framework.
Important: 217 is the current exam
The TExES ELAR 4-8 exam was redeveloped in 2022. The older 117 version had its final administration on December 31, 2021. This course is built on the current 217 framework, which includes competencies on differentiation, effective learning environments, assessment, and a constructed-response task. Candidates for this certificate are also required to take the Science of Teaching Reading (293) exam.
AI Study Buddy
Every study guide includes an embedded AI Study Buddy that answers questions about the content in real time. Ask it to explain a concept, give a classroom example, define a key term, or quiz you on what you just read. It is grounded in the study content for each competency, so answers stay focused on the course.
Smart Study Dashboard
Your personalized Smart Study Dashboard tracks your performance across every competency. See where you are strong and where you need more practice, with color-coded progress bars and trend indicators. The dashboard also includes Verónica, your AI tutor, who coaches you on areas for improvement through conversation.
Practice Quizzes
Each competency includes a practice quiz with immediate, per-question feedback and detailed explanations. The deployed pool contains 270 multiple-choice practice items across the official TExES English Language Arts and Reading 4-8 (217) selected-response framework. A 10-question diagnostic quiz at the start helps you identify strengths and areas for growth, and each domain includes a review quiz to consolidate your learning.
Question-bank review
The question bank was rebuilt in May 2026 for the current 217 framework and reviewed for framework alignment, answer-key balance, distractor plausibility, grade 4-8 fit, and common ELAR misconceptions. Items are scenario-based and designed to help candidates practice the reasoning expected on the selected-response portion of the exam.
Full selected-response capstone practice
At the end of the course, you sit a timed 90-question practice exam aligned to Domains I–IV of the TExES English Language Arts and Reading 4-8 (217) blueprint. The capstone allows 285 minutes of testing time. Retakes draw from the course question pool. A scaled score of 240 or higher marks the capstone as passed in the course.
About the constructed-response portion of the real exam
The official Pearson exam includes 90 selected-response questions and 1 constructed-response question. Domain V, Constructed Response, is worth 20 percent of the scaled score. This app does not grade written responses. It prepares you directly for the 90 selected-response questions and provides informational guidance for Domain V. The companion printed prep book includes an original constructed-response practice case for additional writing practice.
Earn a verifiable digital credential
