The part of the STR exam that is hardest to practice

The TExES Science of Teaching Reading (293) exam includes one written case study. It is the entire Domain IV, approximately 20 percent of the exam. You receive four exhibits of student assessment data and write about 400 to 600 words that identify the student’s needs and defend your instructional choices. The official preparation manual has one sample question, and scores for the written response can take up to 28 days to arrive.

What the Constructed-Response Coach includes

  • 10 original case studies in the format of Pearson’s sample: four tabbed data exhibits (word reading, passage reading, fluency data, comprehension) and the same five-task assignment. The cases span grades 1 to 3 and ten different reading profiles. Each was reviewed for accuracy against the science of reading, published DIBELS 8 and Acadience benchmarks, and the Texas ELAR TEKS.
  • Learn the method first. A guided orientation shows you how to read each type of exhibit, and worked examples walk through a full case step by step.
  • Practice scoring in about a minute. Two AI raters each score your response 1 to 4 against Pearson’s published rubric and add the two scores, the same 2 to 8 scale Pearson describes for this question. You see the performance level (Thorough; General; or Limited, Little, or No Understanding) and each rater’s reasoning. These are practice estimates, not official scores.
  • Feedback you can act on. Hints that point you back to the exhibits when a claim does not match the data, a five-task checklist, comments on Completion, Application of Content, and Support, and a focused next step for your revision.
  • Verónica, your AI coach. Ask her about an exhibit, your draft, or your score. She answers with questions grounded in the case data; she never writes your response for you.
  • Quick Drills. 30 short practice drills, 5 to 10 minutes each, with instant feedback on the three moves that separate a 3 from a 4: spot the need, rule out the tempting alternative, and make a strategy specific.
  • Revise and resubmit. Fix your response and get new feedback in about a minute. A model response is available for every case, and your case menu shows your latest and best practice score.
  • Exam-like conditions. Tabbed exhibits, a plain answer box with a live word counter, and an optional pacing timer.

Want the reading knowledge too?

The coach practices the written response. The STR 293 course teaches the content behind it (13 competencies, 332 practice questions, a 90-question practice exam). STR 293 Complete includes both for $49. If you already own the course or the STR 293 book, use the owner code shown in your course or in the book for 20 percent off the coach.

Who this is for

Candidates for Early Childhood PK-3, Core Subjects EC-6, Core Subjects 4-8, and ELAR 4-8 certificates, all of which require the 293 exam. It is especially useful if you are retaking the exam or if the written response is the part you want to strengthen.

How access works

Access is added to your Enabling Learning account right after purchase and lasts 6 months. Everything runs in your browser; there is nothing to download.

Honest fine print

Scores from the coach are practice estimates from AI raters that apply Pearson’s published rubric. The same response can score 1 point differently when scored again. They are not official scores and do not predict or guarantee any result on the TExES 293 exam. This product is an independent study tool from Enabling Learning LLC and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Pearson or the Texas Education Agency.
