Humboldt’s accounts of the continent, its people, its landscapes, its squandered potential under colonial rule, helped sharpen the young Bolívar’s conviction that independence was both possible and necessary. Years later, Bolívar would call him the true discoverer of the New World. Reading that chapter, I finally understood why our history books put the two names in the same sentence so often.

You feel the cold at altitude, the exhaustion, the joy of discovery.
But the best parts of the book are not the adventure scenes. They are the moments when Wulf slows down and shows you how Humboldt thought. How he connected what he was seeing in the Andes to what he had read about the Alps. How he linked plants, climate, geology, and human activity into a single picture of the planet. How he refused to separate science from art, or observation from imagination.
The Big Idea
Humboldt’s central insight was that everything in nature is connected. That is not a slogan. It is a scientific claim, and he was one of the first people to articulate it clearly. What happens in a rainforest in South America affects what happens in a European farm. What colonial planters do to the soil affects rainfall, temperature, and long term agricultural viability. People living in comparable climatic and geographical regions, even on opposite sides of the world, share more challenges and opportunities than we tend to notice.

There is another reason this book felt timely to me. We are once again talking about exploration, this time beyond Earth. Humans returning to the Moon. Plans for Mars. Private companies, national agencies, new generations of engineers and scientists. There is excitement in the air, and I feel it too.
What struck me most in the closing chapters of Wulf’s book was the story of Humboldt’s final project, a multi-volume work he simply called Kosmos. He began writing it in his seventies and continued until his death at age 89, trying to describe the entire physical universe as one interconnected whole: the planet, the atmosphere, the stars, the geological forces, and the living beings within it. He was already reaching beyond Earth, already asking the kind of questions that belong to space exploration as much as to earth science. Wulf’s account of those last years, with Humboldt working by candlelight late into the night, is one of the most moving passages in the book.
So when I think about our current moment, I hope we carry something with us when we go. I hope we bring Humboldt’s way of seeing. His love for the places he visited. His respect for everything he studied, from rainforests and rivers to rock formations and patterns of climate, the living and the non-living alike. His refusal to treat nature as mere resource. His understanding that a planet is not a collection of objects but a web of relationships, and that the same principle should guide us wherever we go next.
And I hope we remember, while we look up, that there is still so much to explore and protect right here. Rainforests we have barely mapped. Oceans we hardly understand. Mountains we have climbed but not truly read, the way Humboldt read them, as puzzles waiting to be solved. The next generation of explorers will not run out of questions, on this planet or any other.

I have been sharing this book with my own children. My oldest, who loves a serious read, is working his way through it. My youngest, who is passionate about geography but not quite ready for the density of a 500 page biography, started exploring Humboldt on his own through YouTube videos and documentaries. He came to me the other day wanting to talk about the Orinoco and Chimborazo, completely unprompted. That is exactly what a good book is supposed to do. It plants seeds that grow wherever they find soil.
