Claude for Teachers: Free Premium Access

Anthropic’s Free Offering for Educators

In the previous topics you explored OpenAI’s and Google’s tools for educators. Now Anthropic has joined them. On July 14, 2026, Anthropic announced Claude for Teachers, a program that gives verified K-12 educators in the United States free access to premium Claude capabilities, a library of ready-made teaching skills, and connections to evidence-based curricula aligned to academic standards in all 50 states.

This topic builds on the Claude tools you have already seen in this course: Claude Projects in the Building Your AI Assistants module, and Claude Cowork, which is covered in the next topic of this lesson.

Free access: Claude for Teachers is free for verified U.S. K-12 educators. Sign up by June 30, 2027 and you get a full year of free access. Enrollment is individual (Anthropic says district offerings are coming soon). Sign up at claude.com/solutions/teachers.

Key Capabilities

• Standards-aligned lesson planning: Claude drafts lesson plans that draw on evidence-based curricula such as OpenSciEd and Illustrative Mathematics, mapped to your state’s academic standards
• A teaching skills library: Ready-made “skills” (packaged instructions Claude follows for a specific task) for common teacher workflows, so you do not have to engineer every prompt from scratch
• Differentiation: Adapts materials for students at different readiness and proficiency levels, with personalized scaffolds
• Class data analysis: Analyzes de-identified rosters, diagnostics, and attendance patterns to help you plan instruction
• Automated recurring tasks: Schedule work that repeats, for example reviewing each day’s exit tickets and suggesting adjustments to the next day’s plan
• Claude Code and Cowork: The announcement highlights both agent tools as part of the program. These are the same tools covered in this lesson (Cowork in the next topic, and the CLI in the advanced topic), so eligible teachers can try them without a paid plan

Connected to Tools Schools Already Use

At launch, Claude for Teachers connects to nine educational tools: ASSISTments, Brisk Teaching, Canva Education, Coteach, Diffit, Eedi, MagicSchool, Snorkl, and TeachFX. If your school already works with any of these platforms, Claude can plug into that existing workflow instead of replacing it. (You may recognize MagicSchool and Canva from this course’s AI Toolbox.)

Privacy Commitments

Anthropic makes three notable commitments for this program:

• Claude for Teachers data is not used for model training
• Student information is covered by a K-12 Data Processing Addendum written to comply with FERPA
• Anthropic is working with the American Federation of Teachers on safety and privacy standards for K-12 education, and is running a pilot study with Detroit Public Schools Community District

Our standing advice still applies. Even with these protections, keep the habits from the Using AI Responsibly lesson: de-identify student information before sharing it with any AI tool, and verify AI output before you use it with students or families.

Also note that Claude keeps its 18-and-over policy. Claude for Teachers is a tool for you, the educator, not a student-facing platform. That matches the focus of this course: your productivity, not classroom AI use by students.

• “Using my district pacing guide and Illustrative Mathematics, draft a one-week lesson sequence on ratios for 6th grade, aligned to our state standards”
• “Adapt this science reading for Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced English proficiency levels, and highlight Spanish cognates in the vocabulary list”
• “Analyze this de-identified reading diagnostic export, group students for small-group instruction, and explain the reasoning behind each group”
• “Each afternoon, review the exit tickets in my folder, summarize the most common misconceptions, and suggest one adjustment to tomorrow’s lesson”
• “Draft a bilingual (English and Spanish) parent newsletter about our upcoming science fair, warm in tone, with dates and what families need to do”

ChatGPT for Teachers and Claude for Teachers: Try Both

Both programs are free for verified U.S. K-12 teachers, so you do not have to choose based on price.

Our recommendation: if you are eligible, sign up for both while they are free, run the same task in each, and keep the one that fits your workflow best. The prompting and verification skills from this course transfer directly to either platform.

Outside the U.S.? Claude for Teachers is currently limited to verified U.S. K-12 educators. Claude’s regular free tier is still available everywhere, and everything you learned in this course works on it.
