From Chatbots to Agents: What Changed
When this course first launched in September 2025, AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude were impressive but fundamentally reactive. You typed a question, and the AI answered. You asked it to write something, and it wrote it. Every conversation started fresh, and the AI could only work with what you gave it in that moment.
In the past six months, something significant has changed. AI has evolved from chatbots into agents.
What Is an AI Agent?
An AI agent is an AI system that can:
- Take multi-step actions to accomplish a goal, not just answer a single question
- Remember context across conversations and sessions
- Access your files and documents to work with your actual materials
- Make decisions about how to approach a task, not just follow rigid instructions
- Use tools like web search, file editing, and code execution
Think of it this way: a chatbot is like texting a knowledgeable friend. An AI agent is like having a teaching assistant who knows your curriculum, remembers what you discussed last week, and can actually go do things for you.
Why This Matters for Educators
For teachers, this shift means AI can now:
- Know your curriculum standards without you re-uploading them every time
- Remember your students’ needs across conversations
- Create materials based on your actual lesson plans, not generic templates
- Work across multiple tasks in a single session (write a lesson plan, then create the assessment, then draft the parent letter)
Reminder: protect student data. Some examples in this module involve student work. Before you apply them, keep personally identifiable student information (names, ID numbers, grades, IEP or 504 details) out of any AI tool unless your district has an approved agreement, and use anonymized data instead.
