Expanding Learning on the Go – The Educational Power of Audiobooks

In a previous blog post, I shared how podcasts have become a powerful tool for learning on the go. Podcasts have transformed our daily commutes, making them moments of growth, learning, and connection. But podcasts aren’t the only way to enrich those seemingly mundane moments of travel or downtime. Today, I’m diving into another tool that has had a similarly profound impact on my family’s learning journey over the past decade: Audiobooks. Just like podcasts, audiobooks provide a seamless way to immerse ourselves in knowledge and stories, making every moment, whether in transit or at home, an opportunity to learn.

Homework vs Homeplay: Playful Learning Beyond the Classroom

I understand that the subject of assigning homework can be controversial, but recent research is increasingly validating what I tried to apply as a teacher years ago. Studies now show that traditional homework, especially for younger students, offers limited academic benefits and can even diminish the joy of learning. Many schools are shifting toward more meaningful and engaging assignments that connect with students’ lives outside the classroom. When I was working as a bilingual teacher, I always believed that learning shouldn’t be confined to the school walls. True learning happens when students connect what they learn in school with their everyday lives and when families become active participants in the educational process. This inspired me to seek out technology that could help my children refine their skills, leading me to discover several apps that provide real-time feedback and interactive learning experiences.

My Journey from Constructivism to Constructionism

During my teacher training in Venezuela, a professor introduced me to constructionism, an evolution of constructivism. He highlighted Dr. Seymour Papert, an educator and mathematician from MIT, who was deeply influenced by his time working with Jean Piaget in Geneva. While Piaget’s constructivism focused on how individuals internally construct knowledge, Papert expanded this idea with constructionism, emphasizing that students should create physical constructions, not just ideas, which others can observe and critique.
