Transforming Bilingual Teacher Preparation with AI

My first year as a bilingual teacher was a whirlwind of frustration and self-doubt. Despite my optimism, I often felt overwhelmed by the demands of teaching students at varying levels of language acquisition. Meeting their diverse needs with limited preparation left me feeling unprepared and isolated. Fortunately, experienced teachers recognized my struggles and stepped in to mentor me. Without proper preparation or mentorship, many teachers face burnout, students suffer from inconsistent instruction, and the profession continues to see high attrition rates. This experience showed me how critical it is to provide robust, accessible, and innovative teacher preparation programs. That’s why I developed Verónica, an AI-powered virtual tutor designed to bridge these gaps. I’ll be presenting this solution and sharing how it can transform teacher preparation at the upcoming NABE Conference.

Teaching Critical Thinking in the Age of AI and Social Media

In today’s digital landscape, our students face a constant flood of information, and misinformation. With the rise of social media and AI-generated content, the need for critical thinking skills has never been more urgent. As educators, we have a responsibility to help students navigate this complex web of information, equipping them with the tools they need to discern fact from fiction.

One insightful resource on this topic is Yuval Noah Harari’s book Nexus. Harari explains how “echo chambers”, spaces where we’re surrounded by information that reinforces our beliefs, have always been part of human interaction. But in the digital age, these echo chambers are amplified by algorithms that personalize what we see online, trapping us in bubbles that shape our perceptions.

In this post, we’ll explore practical strategies to teach students media literacy and critical thinking in the age of AI. From understanding algorithmic bias to recognizing deepfakes, these tools can help students become more informed and thoughtful digital citizens.

Transforming Teacher Training: A Hybrid Approach to PD

Our hybrid professional development model combines face-to-face workshops with continuous online support and is designed specifically for teachers of emergent bilingual students in STEM. Educators engage in hands-on activities during full-day workshops, learning effective strategies like the ExCEL Method of Instruction. Afterward, they gain access to an online platform equipped with AI-powered tools that assist in creating personalized lesson plans and resources, all tailored to students’ language proficiency and academic needs. What sets this model apart is its foundation in real classroom experience. The AI is trained using data and insights from experienced bilingual educators and instructional experts who have worked directly with emergent bilingual students.

Empowering Multilingual Learners and Pre-Service Teachers with AI

As an educator and instructional designer deeply committed to bridging gaps in education, I am particularly proud to be part of an initiative transforming support for emergent bilingual students: the Bilingual Homework Hotline (BHH). I joined this innovative project in 2021, which is a collaboration between the University of North Texas, Texas Woman’s University, where I served as a Visiting Assistant Professor, and the Denton Independent School District. This project addresses the unique needs of students learning in two languages while tackling academic challenges. The BHH offers dual benefits: it provides students with crucial, real-time support in understanding their homework, and it gives pre-service teachers the opportunity to apply the theory they’ve learned in a practical setting. This hands-on experience sharpens their teaching skills, enhances cultural awareness, and strengthens their ability to meet the academic and linguistic needs of emergent bilingual students.
